Kuttichaathan Theyyam

Kuttichathan Theyyam
Kuttichathan theyyam is a widely acclaimed Theyyam through out Kerala. The undeniable relationship between Kalakaattillam and Kuttichatan Theyyam is famous. Lord Shiva and his wife Devi Parvathi were staying in a remote hill area along with valluvar community. They had two children called Kaawal and Kuttichathan. The later born in a peculiar manner with flower on his forehead,a third divine eye and dark skinned body with long white stripes. There lived a Kaalakad Nambuthiri whose wife did not conceive a child. As a result of his prolonged fasting and prayers lord gave the second child of valluvathi to the Nambuthiri family.
The kid started displaying characters ‘not characteristics of Brahmin kid’ when he grew up. The child had his early education and was showing certain mischievous acts during his grasp and never obeyed anyone including teachers and elders. One of the teachers who got angry at was him immediately killed by Kuttichathan. He left the school right on the day of admission. He even killed and drunk its blood inorder to quench his thrust. The doors of Kaalakatt Illam were closed before him and he wandered through out the land doing all things that he wanted to do.
Once with in intense desire to see his foster mother he went to Kaalakatt Illam but the mother refused to see him.As a retort he killed father’s cow and drank its blood. It infuriated the Nambuthiri father and the elders in Kaalakatt family and they killed him. But Kuttichathan didn’t die. Then they cut him into 390 small pieces and put into a different fire pits created for Homa. But to their astonishment lot of Kuttichathan got generated from each of the fire. Each Kuttichathan performed fire dance and burned Kaalakkatt Illam and all the related areas of Kaalakatt Illam and all the related forms created lots of disasters in the area. Nambuthiri and others in the society considered chatan as divine power and performed him in the form of theyyam. Thus Kuttichathan became a Theyam.
Kuttichathan is a Theyyam of Brahmin community. Though there are a lot of Chathans , three of them are prominent. They are Karim Kuttichathan, Pookuttichathcan and Thee Kuttichathcan. Karim Kuttichathan is believed to be part of lord Vishnu and Thee Kuttichathan part of Lord Siva. As Kuttichathan is closely associated with Kaalakat Mana it is also known as Kaalakkatt Kuthichathan.
